■ 科目のねらい
「基礎教養科目」として配置されている本科目は、地域社会や職場で豊かな人間関係を築くために必要な幅広い教養の修得をめざし、自己を取り巻く世界や環境を知り、多角的視点からものを考える力をつけることを目的とするものである。（DPに対応する中項目：①＋④⑥）
This course aims to improve students ability to communicate in English in various different situations and develop their flexibility in describing， explaining and problem solving.

■ 授業の概要
The main aim of this course is to give the chance for students to improve their ability in using English in a variety of situations which deal with everyday conversations and scenarios. Classes will be largely practical and will focus on 4 main areas: 1) Talking about culture :2) Talking about appearances and personality; 3) Storytelling and 4) Talking about work and travel.

■ 達成目標・到達目標
Students will be able to explain their own culture in English.
Students will be able to talk about their own and other people’s appearance and personality.
Students will improve their ability to talk in detail about events.
Students will improve their ability in dealing with new situations in English.

■ 単位認定の要件
A passing grade will be given to students who attend at least 2/3 of classes and complete all assignments and tests. Speaking tests (20% x 2)， Presentations (15% x 3)， general active participation (15%)

授業内試験：40％　授業内活動：60％

Talking about various experiences in detail.

Explaining Japanese culture to foreigners.

Cultural festival. Presentation 1

Whole class questionnaire based on topics chosen by students.

第6回 Personalities and Appearances 1

Vocabulary and model sentence structures to describe personalities and appearances

第7回 Personalities and Appearances 2

Speaking test 1

第8回 Comparatives

Using comparatives in the form of a quiz.

第9回 Superlatives 1

Talking about experiences using the superlative form

Speaking test 2

第11回 Working

Using a recruitment fair role-play to practice talking about working conditions. Presentation 2

第12回 My town

Talking about hometowns using a tourism perspective. Presentation 3

第13回 Stress and holiday preferences

Discussion on how to relieve stress and holiday preferences.

第14回 Travel 1

Visiting a foreign country focusing on arrival and departure.

第15回 Travel 2

Role-play on various situations arising when visiting a foreign country.

■ 時間外学修
Students will evaluate previous classes (30-40 mins)， prepare for future classes (30-40 mins) and rehears
e outside of class for presentations and tests (2-3 hours).

■ 課題に対するフィードバック
Feedback will be both on an individual and groups basis， with an emphasis on self-evaluation.

■ 使用テキスト・教材
All necessary materials will be handed out in class. Students should prepare an A4 file to keep handouts

■ 備考
An important point of the course is for students to realise that English is not Grammar / Translation. It
is a tool for communicating. Therefore active participation is very important in this class. Good Luck!
