■ 科目のねらい
共通科目領域におけるこの科目は、学生が学問の方法を身につけ歴史と文化を踏まえて人間や社会の出来事を総合的に
理解し説明できるようになるため、「教養」の群に設置されている。（DPに対応する中項目：③④）

■ 授業の概要
This course aims to introduce various aspects of British and American popular culture in the 20th century.
Students will deepen their understanding　of the impact of popular culture on modern society. They will
also learn about the influence of western culture on Japanese popular culture through discussion and presentation.
Various themes will be covered including: literature; music; television; food and lifestyle changes.

Students will gain knowledge of western cultures and customs.
Students will be able to compare western and Japanese popular culture.
Students will be able to define the impact western culture has had on Japanese culture.
Students will read and understand some popular and important literature of the 20th century.

■ 単位認定の要件
Grades will be determined by 3 reports (literature 30%， comparative culture　30%， one aspect of
western culture 30%) and participation in class (10%)

期末レポート：30％　授業内提出物：60％　授業内活動：10％

General overview of how lifestyles changed in the last century.

第3回 Society 2

Focussing on work habits， education and travel.

第4回 Games and sports 1

Examining important sporting moments and looking at popular games.

第5回 Games and sports 2

Using various games to examine western ways of thinking.

第6回 Music 1

Musical trends in the first half of the century.

第7回 Music 2

Musical trends in the second half of the century.

第8回 Movies 1

The growth and trends of the movie industry in the first half of the century.

第9回 Movies 2

The growth and trends of the movie industry in the second half of the century.

第10回 Fashion

How fashion reflected changes in society.

第11回 Customs

How customs reflect ways of thinking and daily life routines.

第12回 Television， radio， computers

The evolution of television， radio and computers and the role they play in society.

第13回 Transport

How transport patterns have changed and the role of the car in changing society.

第14回 Literature 1

An overview of some of the most important and popular literary works of the last century.

第15回 Literature 2

Selected reading and report

■ 時間外学修
Students will be required to research information before and after class (30-60 mins). They will also read
their chosen literature (5-10 hours).

Individual reports will be discussed with students and students will evaluate themselves and each
other concerning presentations.

All necessary materials will be handed out in class.
